Mental health has increasingly become a necessity in the modern world due to the new raft of challenges that we face in the current generation. This brings forth the need to be mentally strong in order to navigate gracefully past the daily struggles. So what are the basics that we need to inculcate?
1.Have a sense of purpose
What drives you to wake up in the morning every day? It could be anything from wanting a better life for yourself or your family or a bunch of several things, but the bottom line is you need to have an anchor that you can focus on every day. This will help you withstand the pitfalls that will definitely come your way in a bid to distract you from reaching your destiny. In other words, you become resilient and have a never give up attitude that you will need in every step of the way. You can achieve this by having a list of non-negotiable values and principles that serves as a red line for you and no adversity can make you flinch.
2.Do what you fear the most
Because we are animals first before we are humans, it's common sense that the primal instinct of fear exists within us. Anyone who denies this is either a real coward or has not yet challenged himself or herself adequately. It could be the fear of starting a business, applying for a job, making a proposal to your soulmate e.t.c. The more we challenge ourselves to do what scares us the most, the closer we come to achieving our wildest dreams and even if you fail, you will have learned valuable lessons from the experience, so it's a win-win situation either way.
3.Chase authenticity instead of validation
We as humans are social beings, and we tend to adapt to the social environment around us in order to have a sense of belonging. However, constantly seeking external validation in order to develop our sense of worth leads to soul crashing results as we will never be truly happy with ourselves when we become people pleasers. While it's good to feel loved and appreciated by those around us, it's even better to cultivate the inner sense of worth because the surrounding people come and go leaving us by ourselves forever. By having some sense of self-worth, we are able to design our personality, beliefs and goals in the knowledge that what our heart truly desires is what matters in the large scheme of things.
4. Be more self-aware
As easy as this may sound, it's one of the hardest things to achieve consistently. This simply means being more conscious of our thoughts, emotions and what we expose ourselves to whether in social media, or just the people we meet every day. Our emotions play a significant role in the decisions that we make. We tend to snap when faced with tense moments or overlook dangerous moments when we are in a good mood and the only way to avert landing into trouble at such times is to be aware of how we are feeling at the present moment and allow the emotions to pass before making a decision. One of the best ways in doing that is taking the time to think about how you are feeling and name the emotion whether its anxiety, fear, anger e.t.c. This will help in coming up with better ways to respond to situations rather than react impulsively. It's also important to be selective on how we use our social media platforms. Where necessary try to follow educative platforms that feed your mind and uplift your heart because just like we feed our bodies when hungry, our minds need to be fed as well with a healthy 'diet' for it to grow stronger!
